10.12. Mechanism of the hand brake

GENERAL INFORMATION

The mechanism of the hand brake should be checked periodically. Establish the car on a slope, turn on the hand brake, include neutral transfer and check that the car is kept by only the hand brake (the pedal of a brake is released). At carrying out this check it is necessary to be in the car. It is necessary to check the hand brake each two years, or at any suspicion for its abnormal work.

Check

Lift the car and establish on supports, remove back wheels.

On cars with back drum-type brakes checking of thickness of blocks is a part of procedures of periodic service.

On the cars equipped with back disk brakes, remove disks. Take a support aside and fix a support a wire, a tube of a brake do not disconnect.

Check a condition of all details of the hand brake, existence on them of wear and damages. Blocks of the hand brake in cars with back disk brakes as a rule do not demand replacement during all term of operation of the car. However, they can wear out owing to the wrong adjustment of brake system, or because of regular use of the hand brake for a car stop. The limiting size of wear of blocks of the hand brake is not normalized, however it is recommended to change them, if residual thickness of blocks less than 1,5 mm. Check a condition of springs and the regulator mechanism, and also check a drum condition, existence on it deep development of scratches and other damages.

Removal and installation

Prevention

Procedure given below belongs only to the cars equipped with back disk brakes. On cars with back drum-type brakes the system of the hand brake is a component of a back brake.

PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Release bolts of fastening of back wheels, lift a back part of the car and establish on supports. Remove back wheels. Remove brake disks. Each time work only with one party since you can use another as a sample at assembly.
	2. Remove a returnable spring of the bottom block.
	3. Remove the top spring of a block.
	4. Remove a spring spring.
	5. Remove blocks.
	6. Installation is carried out upside-down. Upon termination of the sliding device of blocks should occupy the situation specified in a picture.
7. After installation of a brake disk, adjust blocks of the hand brake. For this purpose wrap two bolts of fastening of a wheel. Turning a regulator, dissolve blocks while they will not brake a disk. Then rotate a regulator back while a disk is not becomes free to rotate. Tighten bolts of fastening of wheels with the set moment.
